Nissan Electric Beats: Brief

Nissan asked us to create a vinyl with two of the music producers on its Electric Beats roster. I was tasked with crafting the creative strategy that would encourage and guide them as they worked on the project.

With over 18 million views and 62 thousand likes, Nissan’s four-hour-long imaginative animated film, featuring a young woman peacefully driving an ARIYA while listening to lo-fi music, is a huge success. More proof that by offering the unusual, brands can attract affinity.

For 2024, Nissan wants to take their lo-fi incorporation a step further, continuing to hint at, without selling, that driving the ARIYA is a serene experience. But rather than a music video, Nissan is pressing and releasing a unique lo-fi vinyl, and will be donating all the proceeds.

That’s where you come in. We need each of you to create 15 minutes of continuous listening a la that of the frequently watched video while showing off your talent. An intersecting of night and day that reflects the ARIYA’s elegance and exhilaration. You can decide between yourselves who will make for evening and who will make for morning. If the former, think calming, reflective, and decompressing. If the latter, think inspiring, optimistic, and awakening.

There are no firm rules, but with that said, there are specifics that we’re looking for. A connection between the two pieces—no matter how different—is one. Another is maintaining a tempo slower than 90 BPM to fall in line with lo-fi tradition.

Keep in mind that there isn’t a need to have new elements throughout the entire 15 minutes. You can use techniques like looping or repeating certain sound effects. Ultimately, we’re just looking for you to bring your one-of-a-kind flare, so the pieces are personally bespoke.
